Chapter 23: graduation speech

To all graduates class of 1940,

In the time of the Great Depression and the time where not every man is equal, one dream and inspiration can go a long way. One dream and one goal can get you start through your life. People such as Martin Luther King Jr. who stood up to racism and prejudges helped our community unite as one. Looking at the class of 1940, I stand here looking at a bright future filled with potential. It is up to you to choose destiny of the African American community. Every person in this room has the ability to achieve their goals and excel to higher levels. Congratulations and best wishes to the Class of 1940.

Maya123: hey ummm...ya i did. the answer is no

Tboy515: why you got to be like that? i really like you

Maya123: ive got too much on my mind to think of you...it well never be

Tboy515: well im going to keep writing even though you dont want me to

Tboy515: hopefully my stubbornness will soften you

Maya123: back off creeper, and i will rip those letters up every time i see it 

Tboy515: time out!!!! WAIT you do like me but you just dont want me to know

chapter 17 & 18

"All those under the sounds of my voice who have no spiritual home, whose hearts are burdened and heavy-ladened, let them come." (pg.130 chapter 18). This quote is represented in the scene at the church. This shows that the African community is welcoming to others to join them in the "house of god". They are kind to one another and appreciate the time spent in the church. 

Prayers are part of their daily lives. Faith and god is what keeps them going during tough times. Momma's life is based off faith. She believes in god and believes in his teachings. She takes Bailey and Marguerite to church and when they act up or misbehave, they get punished. Religion, god, and faith are very important to the people in Stamps.
